BE PROMPT. Arrive 10-15 minutes early. It shows the employer that you are serious. Arriving late makes a bad impression. If you are going to be late or cannot show, call immediately.
2.
BE GRACIOUS. A firm handshake, smile, and cheery "How do you do." will indicate that you are well-poised and can handle clients with finesse and courtesy.
3.
NEVER CHEW GUM OR SMOKE on an interview. Refuse pleasantly, but refuse. Surveys show that 90 percent of employers would hire a non-smoker over a smoker if their qualifications were equal. Chewing gum and smoking make you look nervous.
4.
LOOK AT THE EMPLOYER during the interview. Direct eye contact shows that you are interested. You may be nervous, but fight the impulse to look away.
5.
BE ENTHUSIASTIC.The employer is looking for someone who is genuinely interested in the job and the company.
6.
ASK QUESTIONS, but don't interrupt. You are successful if you can get the employer to talk about the position and goals. Everyone likes flattery! Be careful not to take over the interview and put the employer on the defense! Sell yourself and your skills.
7.
KNOW AS MUCH ABOUT THE JOB and the firm as possible before going on an interview. Ask your counselor questions before you go. Ask the employer all about the job and the company. Again, the interviewer is flattered by your interest.
8.
YOUR EXIT. Whether or not you like the job, always be polite. Sincerely thank the employer for his/her time. If you really want the job, don't hesitate to ask for it with a departing statement to the effect, "I shall be anxious to hear from you as I would like to become part of your organization; I want this job!" Remember a firm handshake leaves a lasting impression.
